4.45pm the very last day of my corporate job, I get called in for my ‘exit interview’.

All I wanted to do was get outta there.

All he wanted to do was get on with his day and his email.

It was doomed from the start.

In my mind, I’d dreamed of announcing with great drama how this corporate gig had squished my soul and caused me to rethink who I was.

In reality, I’d decided to smile, say thanks and go.

Never burn your bridges (my Mamma taught me good 😜)

So, I was surprised when instead of the usual “Why are you leaving?” 

He spat...

“The problem with running this department is women like you. Women who want it all. The career, the family and the flexibility.  

Do you know how hard that is for someone like me? Managing a department full of women who want to work part-time? Women who think they can have it all.”

I wanted to reply that the REAL problem was men like him. But I’d made a pact with myself to take the high road, and so I smiled a wry, sarcastic smile, fingers clenched behind my back and said.

“It sounds tough; I wish you the best with it all.”

And while walking back to my car, heels slung over my shoulder for one last time. I vowed to myself to always remember on the days that might feel tough, the days where I doubt myself.

I can, and I will have it all, and fuck anyone who says otherwise.

So, if you’re having a moment where it feels like you’re pushing shit uphill.

If you’re second-guessing yourself.

Know this.
